Message:  I recently spoke with an American whose ancestors had lived in Victoria. He met someone a short while who indicated that someone had written about their memories whilst growing up in Victoria but he cannot recall who told him. I would love to get hold of a copy and wonder if any visitors to this site might have any idea who the author is /was? Also wonder if anyone out there has any photo's of The Bush Inn known locally as the Coidka / Coedcae? Thanks in advance

Message:  Hi David. Saw your request for 'Baram chapel' Ebbw Vale. Well it’s strange, but I was looking at some old footage with my neighbour who pointed out 'Baram Chapel.' If it’s the same place, it was on the bank opposite the 'Rhyd-y-Blew' Pub in Carmel Town, Ebbw Vale. Sadly it has now been demolished and a house has been erected on the site, but the perimeter wall and entrance steps to the main road are still there. Hope this helps? Phil Swan.

Message:  Hello everyone. What a wonderful website. Someone here mentioned The Caswell's. I was at school with a Deborah Caswell at Waunlywd - a wonderful school. William and Eileen Antell were my grandparents and I lived in one of The Four Villas in Garden City backing onto the steel works (lovely)!! However my memories are of running up the mountains in front of our house and playing in what I think was a resevoir opposite catching tadpoles. My father Colin worked in the steel mill during the 1960's and we left Ebbw Vale around 1970 (I think). He became the shop steward and then turned our lives around for the better and became a white collar worker an a Union Official for NALGO. I also have very strong memories of the Sunday School walks through town in our best clothes (bought by by Nan) and patent shoes that were too tight and caused my ankles to bleed. Would love to hear from anyone who may know me or any of my family. My mother's name is Veronica (Ronnie) and she used to work at Sidoli's Italian cafe (great knicker bocka glories there!!!). She is alive and well living in Sussex but sadly my father died in 1980 in a very sudden car accident at the very young age of 45 years.

However, I spent many a happy week with my grandparents and remember fondly going into town for a drink in The Ida Cafe! Also remember standing in the front garden waving to the steam trains that shunted past! My Grandad, Victor Davies, worked in The General Offices and I would love to hear off anyone who may have known the family. Message:  Derek Woodman that name rings a bell! I worked at Ebbw Vale steel works for eight years from 1959 to 1967, in the tinplate shipping from 1962 to 1967, so if you were there then Derek, I remember you. What characters there were there at the time! Some names spring to mind: Tommy Carpenter, Graham Morgan, Dai Lewis (x2), Eddie Stanton, Jack James, Fred Shirley, Jackie Sullivan, Billy Durnell, Phil Williams, Gordon Steed, Brian Jones, John Hughes, Gordon Baker, Ray Jones, Martin Williams, Roy Massey, Bryn ........? (the printer), there's loads more that would need some memory jogging. They were great times indeed, I left for Llanwern after getting married and was made redundant in 1980 after which I worked for Gwent County Council and Newport Council for twenty five years.

Message:  I visit Ebbw Vale regularly I love the area with its warm welcome and the smell of the history of its past. I was delighted for the communities that they had the Eisteddford in 2010 opening it up for others to see how beautiful it is and the history it holds. I am the Great Neice of a coalminer William Axford born in 1871. I'm keen to trace his history and found him last at one of the mines in Ebbw Vale. So I plan more visits to find out more about him for our family history record. We don't want him to be forgotten.
