My late father was born in his aunt's house in Alexandra St in 1921, she was Ida Thomas who was the local primary school headmistress, my grandparents lived in Letchworth Road and my aunt Kathleen Jones in Hughes Ave, I spent lots of time in Ebbw Vale in the 1950s and 60s, I lived with my aunt for 6 months in 1958 when the trains used to go through the town centre and we went to the Plaza, sadly they are all gone now but I still have fond memories of the town.

My great grandparents Daniel & Honorah McCarthy moved to Ebbw Vale from Cork Ireland in 1868 looking for work. There were 6 children: Margaret, Mary, Nora, Timothy, Cornelius & Ellen. 20 year old Mary & 15 year old Nora left in 1887 for America never being able to return. Nora was my grandmother and it is a joy to see pictures of the town she grew up in.

Just reading some of the messages on the guest book I remember Colliers Row as my auntie lived there Irene Cook,David, Philip, Pauline & Doreen great place to play and learn about life. I used to work in the steelwork with one of the Wilsons I think Paul down the hotmill slabyard, Joined the RAF in 1974 and still visit my brother and sisters in Ebbw Vale strange to see the colour change as it used to be reddy brown from the steel making now it is green and trees everywhere a wonderful change for the better I now work in Saudi Arabia but my home is in Thailand.

A wonderful site.Amazing set of old photos. I have researched some local families, such as Caswells and am happy to help anyone with details of this family. It goes back to the mid 1400s. If Diane Warrender (she has a previous post) should see this post I would like to contact her. I did try and failed. Roy White

Hi, I was born in the Rookery Dec 22nd 1955. I lived in Ebbw until 1999, then moved to Cardiff. My family and i moved to Texas in August 2010 - time to start a new adventure, and start a business to pay for it - hopefully. I often visited Ebbw after moving to Cardiff, but I will have to rely onmemories for some time now. As someone else mentioned on here - no matter where I live, Ebbw will always be home.

Message for David Ball: During my early years, I attended a Barham Chapel, Ebbw Vale. It's location was at the top of Badminton Grove/bottom end of Beaufort opposite the Rhyd-y-Blew pub. It has now been demolished and two houses are now standing on the original site with a further plot for sale. Hope this information is of use to you.

I visit Ebbw Vale regularly I love the area with its warm welcome and the smell of the history of its past. I was delighted for the communities that they had the Eisteddford in 2010 opening it up for others to see how beautiful it is and the history it holds. I am the Great Neice of a coalminer William Axford born in 1871. I'm keen to trace his history and found him last at one of the mines in Ebbw Vale. So I plan more visits to find out more about him for our family history record. We don't want him to be forgotten.
