Monmouthshire Building Society Shield, Round 1
Abergavenny Under-13s 177-2 v Ebbw Vale Under-13s 126-3
Ebbw Vale juniors stumbled at the first hurdle in the cup as they could not match a strong Abergavenny side. After a short discussion this game went ahead at Crickhowell instead of Ebbw Vale with Ebbw Vale agreeing to travel to the sunnier climes of their opponents’ ground.
Winning the toss Vale elected to field against an Abergavenny side benefiting from the influx of players from Monmouth Boys School. The home side set off at a good pace courtesy of some disappointing bowling from the Vale attack coupled with some lethargic fielding.
Kefalas (55) and Hamilton (95no) took advantage to help the hosts post a formidable total of 177-2. In reply Vale made a blistering start mainly through some lusty hitting by Edward Harper (24) and were well up with the asking rate at the seven-over mark.
Good knocks by Nicky Pepper (48no) and Sam Clarke (18) followed, but the more accurate Abergavenny bowlers proved too much for the Vale batsmen who finished on 126-3. Vale will now look to bounce back and maintain their unbeaten league run with a visit from Newport Fugitives this week.
