Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Society Distance From ebbw vale:  12.07 kilometers
The PONTYPOOL & BLAENAVON RAILWAY was started in 1980, and is operated exclusively by volunteers who form the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Company (1983) Ltd. and its support group the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Society. After Big Pit stopped producing coal in 1980, the track was lifted from Cwmbran through Pontypool to just south of Blaenavon (High Level) Station. We started running trains in 1983 and have continued continuously for over twenty five years. We have now secured funding to extend the line for passenger services by about a mile and a quarter further southwards from Furnace Sidings to Blaenavon (High Level). We now need a number of new volunteers to help re-lay the existing track work, and rebuild the station at Blaenavon (High Level).

If you would like to help us with this important work, then return to the HOMEPAGE and click on MEMBERSHIP.

Please check the web site for times of running trains.

Abertillery and District Museum Distance From ebbw vale:  12.55 kilometers
The Abertillery and District Museum is run by the volunteers of Abertillery and District Museum Society, which was founded at an inaugural meeting, held in Carmel Chapel Schoolroom on 30th September 1964. Its membership is open to anyone who accepts the rules of the Society, and on payment of an annual subscription fee.

The aim of the Society is to set up and maintain a museum in Abertillery, to hold monthly talks, and to promote history in the area. The Abertillery and District Museum originally opened on the 13th of January 1972 on the ground-floor of Abertillery library. This was the Museum home until August 1996. The Museum was then temporarily put into store in the Metropole Building. During this period the Society began an intensive fundraising campaign, seeking funds for a new Museum building.

On the 21st June 2001 a new Museum was opened on the ground floor of the Old Market Hall in the Metropole Building by our President Sir Richard Handbury Tenison and Councillor Nigel Daniels. A grant was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund for new cases, displays, and a children's education area in 2006. A refurbished and a very much improved Museum re-opened in July 2007.

the big pit Blaenafon Distance From ebbw vale:  13.51 kilometers
The Attraction is a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums. With facilities to educate and entertain all ages, Big Pit is an exciting and informative day out. Enjoy a multi-media tour of a modern coal mine with a virtual miner in the Mining Galleries, exhibitions in the Pithead Baths and Historic colliery buildings open to the public for the first time.

All this and the world-famous Underground Tour. Go 300 feet underground with a real miner and see what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. Big Pit became part of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales on 1 February 2001. After major redevelopment, it re-opened in 2004 and went straight on to win the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize for Museum of the Year.

The redevelopment turned the original features, like the Pithead Baths, into fresh displays that bring life at the coalface vividly into focus. However, perhaps its most famous feature is still the trip 90 metres down the shaft to explore working conditions underground. An award-winning national museum that still retains many traits of its former role as a coal mine, standing high on the heather-clad moors of Blaenafon, the tunnels and buildings that once echoed to the sound of the miners now enjoy the sound of the footsteps and chatter of visitors from all over the world.

The museum is set in a unique industrial landscape, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 in recognition of its international importance to the process of industrialisation through iron and coal production. Big Pit is a living, breathing reminder of the coal industry in Wales and the people and society it created.

Open daily 9.30am–5pm. Last admission 4pm.

Morlais Castle Distance From ebbw vale:  16.09 kilometers
Within an Iron Age hillfort on a limestone ridge above the Taff Gorge and Merthyr Tydfil are the last traces of the large and strong castle begun in c1287 by Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester on land claimed by Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford.

Warfare broke out between the earls in 1290 and they were severely admonished and fined by Edward I who had to march down from north Wales to intervene. The castle was captured by Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294. It was probably never fully completed and was too remote and exposed to serve as a residence.

The reserve forms part of an impressive limestone escarpment that outcrops along the north eastern edge of Mynydd Llangatwg. It is one of the largest upland limestone cliffs in South Wales. The limestone rock rich in nutrients gives rise to soils that support a wide variety of plants, some rare. Of particular note are several species of rare white beam growing on the cliffs, one of which is only known from this locality. Some 50 species of bird have been recorded breeding here. The limestone itself is peppered with caves, and one of them Agen Allwedd is an important winter roost for lesser horseshoe bats.

Tretower Court and Castle Distance From ebbw vale:  19.15 kilometers
The castle is concentric in design, consisting of a very strongly defended inner ward, of symmetrical plan, completely surrounded by a slighter outer ward. On the south-west, this fronts the river, but elsewhere, it overlooks an artificial moat, also walled on the outer side, which was dry apart from a short section south of the castle, probably used as a dock. The inner ward is diamond shaped with a singular tower on each of the sharper angles (north and south), and a gatehouse with a double tower on each of the blunter ones (east and west). Various buildings, including a great hall, kitchens, private apartments, and a chapel, stood in the inner ward against the curtain wall; some traces remain of their foundations. The outer ward too included a granary, stables, a smithy, the treasury and a goldsmith's workshop, but little can be seen of these buildings today."

Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre Distance From ebbw vale:  28.96 kilometers
Penderyn Distillery is the only distillery in Wales and one of the smallest distilleries in the world. One of the few remaining independent distilleries, Penderyn takes its name from the old Welsh village in which it is located and nestles in the foothills of the ancient Brecon Beacons mountain range. The Brecon Beacons National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty famed for its breathtaking scenery, open moorland, clear rivers and tumultuous waterfalls.

Ten thousand years ago the last ice age ended. The ice floes covering Northern Europe stopped where Penderyn Distillery lies today before retreating back to the Arctic. Here we produce just one cask per day of the finest malted barley spirit, which, when matured, is recognised worldwide as one of the finest malt whiskies. The majority of our spirit goes into cask for ageing in our cellars. Minute quantities are diverted to craft our other award-winning products. In a world dominated by the marketing departments of multinational and multibrand companies we take great pride in our authenticity, obsessive passion and attention to detail.

All exceptional whiskies bring together the crucial ingredients: the still, the wood and the water. If you take the time to read on about our products and process we are sure you will discover why, like Welsh gold, Penderyn Single Malt Whisky is so rare that it has to be on strict allocation to markets outside Wales. It is one of the rarest, finest and most delicate malt whiskies available. From the time when our cooper goes into the sustainable American white oak forests to hand select trees from which our barrels are made through to the bottling line at the distillery where dedicated staff hand polish every bottle as they come off the line our commitment to quality is uncompromising.
