A Brief History of 1st Ebbw Vale (Penuel) Scout group
The 1st Ebbw Vale Scout Group was formed in 1910 along with 5 others, but over the intervening years only 1st Ebbw Vale has survived.
The Group’s first headquarters were at St. John’s Church, on Libanus Road and later moved to the Rational Hall, in Alexandra Street.
In 1950 the local steel making plant, Richard Thomas & Baldwins, provided ground to build a dedicated Scout Hall, but when alterations to the valley’s infrastructure were required to improve transportation, the hall was pulled down to make way for the town bypass.
British Steel Corporation later donated part of a large building to the Group, which was occupied by the local Health Centre. The Group had one half and the ATC had the other. This was located on Armoury Terrace, and the Group remained in this building until the late 80?s. Toward the end of their use of the site, the need for major structural repairs to the building meant it was unfeasible for the Group to continue to use it.
The Leaders and Committee made the decision to purchase a nearby Chapel in 1989, and to convert it into what would become our current Headquarters.
The 1st Ebbw Vale ‘Penuel’ Scout Group officially opened in late 1989, with the name alteration reflecting the new Head Quarters at Penuel Chapel, in Church Street.
The Group were able to slightly modernize the building thanks to a grant, in order to accommodate its growing membership.
Within the past few years the Group has taken its first steps into the 21st Century via the use of the Internet, by the creation of a web site that all members of the scouting community could use, and visit.
