I visited my great great grandfathers village in October 2008, and had an ale or two in the 'Old Crown'. On purchasing 'The History of Uley' from the local Post Office I discovered he occupied the Old Marsh mill in 1838 and emigrated to Australia in 1857 on board the 'Golconda' aged 35. I was fortunate to wander around the site of the old mill and walk the same ground he had trod some 170 years earlier.A very emotional experience, one I will never forget and nor will I forget the wonderful village of Uley. Samuel Smith went on to be one of the 1st pioneers in what is known as the North Shore of Sydney. He lived to well into his seventies and is buried with his son Sidney Smith in a historical church dedicated to the Pioneers of the North Shore in the northern Sydney suburb of Chatswood. His heritage now lives on in a very large family with members throughout the east coast of Australia into Tasmania and as far as the United States where his grandaughter had emigrated to after WW1. I would be pleased to hear from anyone in the UK who might be related to Samuel Smith. |
